This show is presented by Liberty City Arts. Learn more here.
Creative Dialogues brings together two innovative projects that explore the intimate relationships between visual art, poetry, and music. This evening features the collaborative work of several artists, each presenting their unique vision of how different art forms speak to one another across time and medium.
“Poets and Painters” weaves together songs inspired by visual art masterpieces, creating a multimedia gallery of artistic conversation. The program celebrates the creative process across centuries, beginning with Hugo Wolf’s “Michelangelo Lieder.” These German language adaptations of the Renaissance icon’s poetry are paired with the sketches that would later manifest as his iconic sculptures and frescoes. Poulenc’s “Le travail du peintre” (“Work of the Painter”) brings to life the works of Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and other famed modern artists through the Surrealist poetry of Paul Éluard. The program concludes with excerpts from Stephen Sondheim’s “Sunday in the Park With George,” exploring the Work of the Painter beyond the canvas.
“No One Knows the Time” takes listeners on a journey through the fluidity of lived experience, spirituality, and time. Through an exploration of musical form, compositional techniques and rhythm, we join poets and composers as they straddle different continents and time periods in their work to create a unique sense of place. This program showcases the world premiere of new art songs composed and performed by internationally acclaimed composer and Philadelphia resident, Kathryn Woodard. With mezzo-sopranos Amanda Staub and Rachel DiBlasio, Woodard explores the works of poets and composers from the past and present.
